Backyard Composting

Composting is nature's way of recycling and can be done in your backyard! However, keep the compost clean and up to code. View City Code Chapter 46 Section 46-50 to learn more.

Do's and Don'ts of Backyard Composting: 

  • Do compost leaves, grass clippings, straw, non-woody and woody plant trimmings, sawdust, raw fruit and vegetable scraps, dry eggshells, tea bags, and coffee grounds.
  • Do not compost meat, bones, greases, eggs, dairy products, whole or partial animals, feces, or inorganic materials such as rock, plastics, or synthetic fibers.
  • Do store compost in a fully confined fenced area or enclosed structure. 
  • Do not store compost within 25 feet of any body of water or area designated as a floodplain, shoreland, or state-protected wetlands.
  • Do keep a compost area in the backyard, at least five feet from any side or rear lot line and no closer than 20 feet from any dwelling unit located on adjacent property.
  • Do not exceed five cubic yards in volume or five feet in height.
